They Treated Him Like Trash
Previously in Part 1:
Daniel, a homeless street musician, came to the country’s biggest talent show carrying the only thing his father left behind: an old guitar.
A security guard tried to throw him out before he could even audition.
But when judge Claire saw the guitar, something in her face changed.
She quietly said, “Let him in.”
—————–
Daniel was taken backstage.
The contestants stared at him like he had walked in from another world.
One of them whispered, “Is this a talent show or a shelter?”
Another took a photo of him.
Daniel held the guitar tighter.
Finally, his name was called.
He stepped onto the stage.
The lights hit his face.
The host saw his bare feet, his dirty coat, and the old guitar.
Then she smiled at the audience.
“If your voice is good enough, maybe we’ll let you eat tonight.”
The room exploded with laughter.
Daniel lowered his head.
A drop of water from his coat fell onto the guitar.
He wiped it gently with his sleeve.
The host leaned closer.
“Go on. Earn your dinner.”
More laughter.
Daniel slowly turned the guitar in his hands.
The stage light caught the back of the wood.
There, carved deep into the old surface, were faded words.
For my little Daniel.
Dad.
At the judges’ table, Claire stopped breathing.
Her smile vanished.
Her face turned pale.
She stood up slowly, staring at the guitar like she had seen a ghost.
The audience was still laughing.
The host was still smiling.
Daniel placed his fingers on the strings.
Claire whispered one sentence.
“Where did you get that guitar?”
Daniel looked up.
Then he played the first note.
Daniel thought he was about to sing for strangers.
He had no idea one person in that room had spent fourteen years searching for him.
The host mocked him in front of everyone.
The audience laughed.
But when the stage light revealed the words carved into the back of his guitar, one judge, Claire, suddenly went pale.
She stood up and whispered:
“Where did you get that guitar?”
The first note was soft.
So soft that the audience almost missed it.
The host rolled her eyes.
“That’s enough.”
She signaled to the sound booth.
Daniel’s microphone went dead.
The room laughed again.
Two security guards stepped onto the stage and grabbed Daniel by the arms.
His guitar swung against his chest.
For one second, Daniel looked down like he was ready to disappear.
Then he remembered Rosa’s words.
Make them understand why you do.
Daniel pulled one arm free.
His voice was quiet, but it cut through the stage.
“I’m not done.”
The guards froze.
The host snapped, “You are done.”
Daniel looked at the audience.
Then at the guitar.
Then he sang without the microphone.
His voice was rough at first.
Not polished.
Not perfect.
But full of something the room was not ready for.
“Little Daniel, close your eyes,
Daddy’s here through stormy skies.
If the world feels cold and wide,
Hold this song and stay beside.
When I’m gone, don’t be afraid,
Love stays where the music stayed.”
The laughter died.
Phone screens lowered.
No one moved.
Daniel kept singing.
His voice grew stronger, but his eyes filled with tears.
At the judges’ table, Claire’s hands began to shake.

The audience went silent because Daniel sang.
But why did Claire look like she was hearing a ghost?
